What Went Down: Heineken Thirst presents Tiësto @ Sepang International Circuit

Efforts are duly rewarded. In this scenario, while it was a tremendous effort to get into the main arena, there couldn’t be any sweeter dream come true for 25,000 people. From the main turn off to the road leading up to the venue, cars were parked at various corners; throngs of people were walking towards the Welcome Centre. Dressed in a myriad of colours, glow sticks, sunglasses, neon wristbands/headbands adorned one and all. It was heaving bodies against bodies.
From the entrance of the arena, it was a feast for the eyes. The set up for Heineken Thirst was led by visual artist Callen Tham who heads architectural visual collective Neu Bild. Callen and his team designed the structures in the vicinity, collaborating the latest in motion and video mapping technology projected onto five metre tall structures that dominated the Heineken Thirst skyline. A design from the future, the Heineken Infinity Bar had many entranced with its arches illuminated beneath the darkness.
Aside from the spectacular sights, the Heinekabanas were also a part of the exclusive experience for some who had the luxury of a personal dance space, butler and VIP facilities. An elevated area was also designated for VIP pass holders. Although the space was located a little further than desired from the main stage, it was a comfortable liberty coupled with free flow Heineken.
While the main stage gathered most of the attention, there was also the star lounge where one could kick back a little for a change of atmosphere. DJ Xu and Bryan Burger were among a few on the duty roster to entertain in an exclusive lounge, modelled after New York’s VIP clubs.
The music, above all, stole the thunder from every other aspect of Thirst. To warm things up before the headliner, the winner and runner-up of Found @ Thirst 2011, DJ Tommy Cham & DJ Nick Haydez took their positions on deck to drop the opening set. Phil K Lee also had his time to entertain the masses, displaying his prowess as winner for last year’s Found @ Thirst DJ-search. In tune with current dance favourites, he dropped tracks like Diddy Dirty Money feat Skylar Grey ‘Coming Home’, and Thomas Gold vs. Foster the People – ‘Agora vs. Pumped up Kicks’. DJ Gabriel was up next to entertain with his variations of deep house, emphasising his strength in the local dance music scene.
Time decided to run by without as much as a backward glance. Before we knew it, it was DJ Blink on at 10pm. For an hour, we were spellbound with his set. In typical Blink fashion, he was a ball of un-containable energy on stage. With the crowd eating out of his hands the entire set, it was a spectacular frenzy.
There was barely enough time to catch our breaths when Tiësto took charge of the party at the stroke of 11. Clad in a pink t-shirt, the Dutch maestro played a 3 hour set, ranging from electro to trance house. A spectacular sight of fireworks, confetti and amazing visuals were all part of his technically perfect set. We reckon you must feel a lot like a deity when you’re the centre of attention of thousands of people. In this case, we bowed down to Tiësto.
From the architectural visuals to the spectacular line up, the exclusivity and energy of Heineken Thirst was at its climax as 2011 drew the curtains.
