Gallerie Taksu: Pool Party! by Dodit Artawan

Balinese artist Dodit Artawan likes to toe the line and push boundaries. In this series, he questions the influence that America has on his traditional Balinese culture, particularly towards the younger generation. He poses his questions in the form of hyper-realistic paintings that challenge notions of image, perception, reality and illusion. In the same context, Dodit presents an Indonesian homegrown version of the typical ‘car show girls’, or Sales Promotion Girls (SPGs) as Barbies, young attractive girls who are employed to promote products. This embodies the age-old adage that sex sells. Is it advertising, or just over-indulgence? Maybe the human race is just perverted? Go with an open mind and decide for yourself what it all means!
